Choose cosmetics, skin care, sunscreens, moisturizers, etc. that are hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free.

2. Minimize the amount of products that you use on your face. Try to stick with the same product line when you find something that works.

3. Don't over wash your face - no more than twice a day.

4. Don't use exfoliants or microdermabrasion.

5. Use an astringent on oily areas only but make sure to discontinue your usage if redness occurs.

6. Use a mild, soap-free cleanser.

I hope this helps.
Dear Sarah Jane,

My question is...

I have big round eyes (in a nutshell). What make-up tips could you give me to elongate them a bit, as opposed to the big round look now? Something as natural as possible...I don't like to wear too much eye make-up.

Thank You,

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning!

To make your round eyes look more almond shaped, there are a few things that you can do without having to apply a lot of make-up. In fact, for this particular eye shape I would avoid heavy eye make-up all together.

To make your eyes more elongated, concentrate color on the outer corners. Avoid using dark, heavy colors and avoid using color in the inner corner of your eye. Instead, blend your eye shadow from the outer edge of your eye, continue it in a soft v-shape around the eye socket and make the color fade away as it moves towards your nose.

Hopefully this helps - try the different eye shadow techniques until you find one that gives your eyes the appearance you are looking for.

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

Dear Sarah Jane,

Nothing that I have ever tried has helped to clear up my forty-year old skin. Numerous problems that I have include acne, blackheads, ingrown hairs, oiliness, scarring, wrinkles and more. It has caused me to have low self-esteem and I can’t look people in the eye for a given period of time.

I am now studying on the Internet about my stress levels, poor dieting, toxins, yeast overloads, etc. Years of dermatologists, pills, topical treatments, etc. and nothing works.

I know you are not a dermatologist but do you have any suggestions?

Fed up… D.H.

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning!

Wow - it sounds like you've been through some tough times with your skin... It's a problem a lot of women have and it just really depends on the severity, individual case and longevity.

You are right in saying that I am not a dermatologist and your problem is probably one that you should take to a skin specialist but I can give you a few pointers that might shed some light on something you are doing now that could cause your skin to act up.

The first thing I must say is that your skin sounds like it is in constant over-drive to fight off the new products that are "thrown its way". This is not necessarily a bad thing - to sample products - but your skin might just be overloaded. I find that whenever I switch products, I break out. Each break out with each new product is different and most times my face only gets worse. Your best bet is to find something that works with your skin type and stick with it. A line that might be good for you is the Mary Kay skin care line. Their products do not contain any harsh chemicals and I have found that it works extremely well.

Also, make sure that you aren't washing your face more than twice a day. Over-washing can result in breakouts because you are constantly stripping your face of its natural oils. Never, ever use soap on your face either. Purchase a cleanser/toner combination and use that every morning and every night. Lastly, find a moisturizer with no added oils. You don't want to be overloading your face with too much oil if it is already oily.

I hope this helps - write back and let me know how it goes.

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning!

Stretch marks, or the appearance of them, are determined mostly by heredity and getting rid of them is not easy. Some experts aren't even sure that it will be completely possible to get rid of them. The first thing you need to know before heading out on your journey to remove the lines is that there are no over-the-counter creams or lotions that will take the lines away. Stretch marks occur in the middle layer of the skin and the creams you can purchase over the counter can't reach that far into the skin. Vitamin E or cocoa butter treatments make your skin feel soft but they won't make your skin stretch mark free. You should talk to a doctor, dermatologist or a plastic surgeon if you want to seriously reduce those lines.

Prescription creams containing Tretinoin, also called Retin-A, can help to reduce the appearance of NEW stretch marks. These creams should not be used during pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding. This type of treatment will not take the stretch marks away completely and it will not work on older marks that have already faded from red. These creams can be prescribed by your doctor or a dermatologist.

The best thing I can recommend is to talk to your physician and do some research. Being more educated on any subject will give you the power to fight it properly without wasting a lot of money on useless treatments.

Sincerely,
I need help on colors and other make-up tips. Thank you for all of your e-mails, they really help a lot.
A.R.

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning!

The new look this summer for natural make-up is pinks and browns. The best way to apply the make-up so that it does look natural is this:

1. Apply a light pink / brown combination to the eye. Begin with the lighter color closest to the eye and use the brown in the crease of your eye and then finish with the light pink above. This should all be blended together so that it doesn't look like layers but rather a natural progression.

2. Apply a light blusher and possibly a bronzer on the cheeks.

3. Use a soft lip liner to line lips and then use a clear gloss on top.

4. End the look with brown or black mascara.

This is the best "natural" look for this summer. Hope it helps!

Sincerely,
Varicose veins, it is believed, appear due to prolonged standing or inactivity. Strain in the abdominal region, from repeated heavy lifting or pregnancy can also be a cause. Age can sometimes be a factor because as the skin ages, it loses its elasticity and it cannot support the veins as firmly.

In regards to your question - how to get rid of them - there are things that you can do to ward them off in the future and prevent your existing ones from getting worse. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time in the same position - get up and take frequent breaks. Walking can also help with varicose veins and you should walk quite frequently. Another thing you can try is nylons and stockings that are designed to support your legs. They can be a bit expensive and slightly thicker than normal pantyhose but they feel great!

One last note - avoid tight shoes or anything constrictive.

** MY ANSWER**
K,
Controlling curly hair does not have to be a nightmare... Trust me, many women have mastered their curls and you can too! I've put together some easy fixes below... I hope this helps!

1. Always rinse with the coldest water you can bear after you shampoo and conditioner your hair. The cold water "locks down" the hair cuticle and tends to make your hair appear slicker and less frizzy. This will definitely help when it comes time to managing the style later!

2. Once you are done with the washing, take about a dime size portion of conditioner and two to three drops of a product like Varnish by A-G and mix them together on your palm. Then, apply on your hair while damp and work through evenly. You should be putting it from your roots to the ends of your hair and then let your hair dry naturally.

3. To add some control to your hair - try adding a dime size portion of a styling lotion - mousse for example - to the above combination.

Always remember that if your hair is hard to tame, it could be because it is lacking moisture. That is why it is vitally important to use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. If you don't know which products will be best for you or your hair type, ask your stylist the next time you are in. While you are there asking about shampoos and conditioners, you should also ask them if the haircut you have suits your hairstyle. It might be that the style is the problem.

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Frizzy Bangs - Hair Tips

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Dear Sarah Jane,

I was wondering, I have longish bangs and I love them but I can never get them to look right. Any ideas?

Peace
A.

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning!

I totally understand where you are coming from when it comes to dealing with flyaway bangs. It used to happen to me too! You can take hold of the hair problems though by following these step-by-step instructions. There are a few things you will need before we start though... Make sure to have a straightening iron - preferably a ceramic one - have sectioning hair clips nearby, a smoothing balm that will protect your hair against the heat of the iron and a large round brush.

Blow-dry your hair as normal - into whichever style you are used to. Once you are done that, turn your attention over to your bangs. This is when you should use the smoothing balm throughout your hair. Follow the directions on your own packaging because every product is different. If your bangs are naturally curly, you may need to use the straightening iron to give them a shape before taming them. Before straightening with a flat iron, make sure your hair is completely dry - if it is even slightly damp, you can risk damaging your hair. Use your sectioning clips to pin all of your hair from around your bangs back. Next, take small sections and put them through the iron. After you have straightened, style the way you would normally wear your bangs. You should notice that now there should be no frizzies. The styling balm is the major secret.

I hope this helps your hair problems!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane
www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Oily Skin Problems - Skin Advice

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Dear Sarah Jane,

I have oily skin which causes spots. I’ve tried everything from tea tree to acid face peels with no results. I also avoid greasy foods and chocolate. Any ideas?

~ M.B.

** MY ANSWER**

Good Morning,

Well - it sounds to me like you are taking the right steps towards combating your oily skin. When you have oily skin, the oil glands are working overtime and are producing excessive oil which leads to that greasy shine. There are factors that play into this problem including: excessive sweat gland secretion, hormonal imbalance, a hot climate, and spicy foods. Oily skin also needs special cleansing to keep the pores unclogged AND you need to have a proper diet.

There are a few things you should be doing and I've outlined them here. If you have tried a lot of products already and none of those helped, maybe some of this will work.

1. Eat a well-balanced diet and make sure to focus on the low-fat foods.

2. Clean your skin regularly but don't over-cleanse. Cetaphil® cleanser is great to wipe off excess oil.

3. Use a facial scrub at least once a week to clean out your pores.

4. Make sure that your make-up and skin care line is free of oils.

5. Drink plenty of water and other fluids.

6. Avoid touching your skin with your hands.

7. Work out regularly but make sure you remove all make-up beforehand.

8. Try microdermabrasion - they have some great at home kits.

Try the things I've listed here and if none of that helps, let me know. Just make sure not to switch products too often because the "shock" could cause your oil glands to go into hyper drive.

Sincerely,

Can you give me any advice on how I can firm the skin under my chin and the skin in my neck area?

** MY ANSWER**

Cindy,

Your question is actually something that I get asked a lot. As we age, our skin and muscles lose their natural firmness but it doesn't mean that you have to live with that double chin or saggy neck skin.

If you compare that area of your body with any other area, you will see that the tissue under the chin collects fat if given the opportunity. This is what causes double chins - simple fat deposits.

The first thing you want to do is ensure that your diet is high in fibre and low in fat. Make sure your diet is also low in calories but ensure it contains plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. This will help reduce the number of fat deposits you will notice on your body.

Another thing that will help is to use a skin tightening or toning lotion in those troublesome areas. This will help firm your skin back to its natural state. There is also an exercise that you can do that will actually help the area. What you want to do is exercise the platysma - a muscle that helps you to pull down the corners of your mouth and pull down the jawbone.

Here is the exercise:

Open your mouth wide and pull your bottom lip over your bottom teeth. Move your jaw up and down as if you are trying to scoop something into your mouth. Perform ten reps of this exercise each time and do this two or three times every day.

I hope this helps... Let me know if you see any improvement over the next while!

Sincerely,
You need to work on getting rid of the fat that sits on top of your muscles before you work on tightening and toning the muscle itself. If you do sit ups or leg presses without getting rid of the fat underneath, you are just building the muscle under the fat and this will create an overall “puffy” look.

Continue (or start!) doing primarily cardiovascular training. Make sure you are eating healthy and drink plenty of water. If you eat right, drink lots of water and do basic cardiovascular training, the fat deposits will begin to go away which will bring forward your muscles which you can then work on toning. If you like group activities, try Pilates. It’s great for toning all areas of the body and doesn't require a lot of endurance training.

Once you have completed removing the fat deposits from the layer between your skin and muscle, begin by doing leg presses and sit ups. This will begin to build the muscles in your stomach, bottom and thighs and will create that toned look you are looking for.

Good luck and keep in touch!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Coloring Natural Hair - Hair Tips

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Hello!

I have been growing my perm out for the past 2 years and now I want to get it colored. Is it okay to get natural hair colored? Is there a different procedure that needs to be done to natural hair?
Thank you so much for writing to us with your hair care question J

When you are looking at coloring your hair, it is important that you take the precautions and do a bit of research first so I commend you on that. Coloring your hair, regardless of the state your hair is currently in, can wreak havoc on your hair in many ways. However, a lot of women (and men!) color their hair and it is used for both a change or to cover grey. Since you are growing your hair out of a perm that you used to have, you are right in saying that your hair is currently in a natural state. Another term for this is “virgin hair”. Most colorists at professional salons would recommend that if you are coloring virgin hair that you do so in a salon. The coloring kits that you get at a pharmacy or drug store are usually used by people who are re-coloring their hair. It is fine to color your natural hair but I would recommend doing so professionally.

As for the differences in damage – your hair will dry out from coloring no matter what. Any change that you put your hair through causes a hair reaction. It will be slightly damaging to your hair regardless of whether it is permed or natural so I wouldn’t worry too much about that when you get it colored. The important thing to remember is to follow-up afterwards with a deep conditioning treatment. Something that will make your hair not as dry and something that will keep the vibrancy in your hair.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you end up getting your hair colored – I would love to know the outcome! The plastic surgeon uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.”

You can purchase kits at drug stores and stores like Wal-Mart for a fraction of the cost. I believe Neutrogena is coming out with an at-home kit that is fairly inexpensive and produces great results. I haven’t tried it, so I can not comment on the effectiveness of the product but I would recommend trying it.

I hope this helps, let me know if you do end up trying it and how you go with it.

Talk to you soon!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Product Differences - Skin Tips

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Hi Sarah!

How are you? I would like to ask you about putting cream on my face. Can you tell me which is better out of these two products? Nivea Simply Glowing Moisturizer or Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer. I would be very thankful to you if you would help me with this.

Take care,

~ D.N.

** MY ANSWER**

Hi!

Thank you for writing to Get Gorgeous Now with your question!

In terms of the differences between these two products, let me tell you a little about each - this information was taken from the products website to ensure we were using factual attributes of the product.

Nivea Simply Glowing Moisturizer is used to help give your skin healthy nutrients with a unique combination of Essential Minerals, Apricot Extract and Vitamin C. It will brighten skin tone with shimmering pigments for long-lasting radiance. It will also enhance your skin's appearance, leaving it smooth and supple.

Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer is a light, fast-absorbing moisturizer which has a unique formula with an exclusive Total Soy Complex to help naturally even out skin tone and smooth texture, and it also contains Salicylic Acid to help clear up and prevent blemishes — leaving skin clear, smooth and even-looking.

My recommendation would be to go with the product that seems to have the best match to the results you want. While the product with salicylic acid will help clear up blemishes, the product without will also cause less reactions in the first use. Both products seem to do the same sort of thing - clear up your skin and make it radiant.

Be sure to also check out our radiant skin newsletter and the part of the book that talks about skin care. All of these things combined will lend itself to making your skin look its best!

Hope this helps - thank you for writing!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane
www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Clearing Up Blackheads - Skin Tips

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Hi Sarah Jane

I need help. I have blackheads on my nose, forehead and cheeks. I try so hard to take care of my skin, but due to the contraception pill get acne and pimples often so I use Clearasil cleanser and moisturizer. (Even though I feel embarrassed when buying it as I am 23 years old)

I cleanse and moisturize every morning and night and always use a moisturizer with a sunscreen.
Thank you for your interest in Get Gorgeous Now and thank you for writing!

In terms of skin care, it can be a problematic area for the best of us! Being on the pill can also create hormonal problems such as what you are going through right now! I’m glad that you told me you were following a skin care regimen and the product you were using. If none of this is helping, you may want to seek the advice of a dermatologist. They may be able to point you in the direction of a product that is prescribed and will help your skin.

If you don’t want to see a dermatologist, I recommend looking into using a more expensive product than Clearasil. While the product may work for some, it doesn’t work for everyone that uses it. Personally, I would highly recommend Mary Kay’s line of skin care products. I use the entire facial cleansing system and have seen a dramatic increase in my own skin. By using this total skin care system, any blemish that I have had has cleared up and went away.

The key is following a system and doing a few other things to help your face out. Drink plenty of water and keep your hair away from your face where possible. Keep your hands away from your face because it can transfer oils to your face which will clog pores and sleep facing up towards the ceiling, away from your pillow. I know that sounds difficult, but your body will get used to it after a few nights.

I hope this helps – skin care is the one thing we get asked about most often and it’s always a pleasure to help out.

Let me know if this does indeed help out… Again, thanks for writing!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

Thank you for writing!

Your question is actually one I get quite often. Having small eyelids can inhibit the make-up you wear, but it shouldn't stop you from wearing make-up! I've outlined a "plan of action" for you to try to see if it opens your eyes. I've seen a lot of women getting their make-up done for film, photo shoots, etc. and I've heard a lot of advice on applying make-up.

First, begin by analyzing your plucking / waxing methods. You should only be plucking / waxing the hairs beneath your brow and not on top. By doing this, you do not increase the overall space between your hairline and your eyebrow but rather your eye and your eyebrow. It will begin the process of opening up your eyes.

Next, when you are going to apply make-up, use a light shadow on the inside of the eye and gradually get darker as you go out and away from the corner of the eye. I would recommend using a shimmery, light color on the inside corners and move to a shade or two darker as you move out. If you really want to play with some colors, go light / shimmery on inside, shade or two darker as you move out, and a rich, darker color in your outer crease.

One word of advice however - do not line both the top and bottom of your eyes with eyeliner unless you are choosing a shade that is very soft and very subtle. The reason being is it makes your eyes look much, much smaller than they really are.

So, I hope this helps. Let me know if it works for you!

Have you picked up a copy of our book? It contains so many great beauty, fashion, and self-confidence tips for women of all ages. If you haven't, I would recommend it!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

** MY ANSWER**

Hi Beverly!

I love green eyes! In terms of the type of make-up you should be wearing, let me categorize it into neat little categories that should help your quest for make-up perfection!

Lip Color:

Your best bet on lip color is clear gloss or a very sheer, pale gloss in a baby pink or peach shade. This works especially well if you have semi-pale skin. You don't want to choose any daring, bold colors because that will definitely strike negatively with your beautiful green eyes.

Eye Shadow:

With eye shadow, you'll play off your eyes the best with pale pink, light to medium pinkish-brown and medium purple shades of eye shadow. Avoid matching colors to your eye color (this is instant overload) and be sure not to go a contrasting color such as blue.

Mascara:

Choose either a clear (day) or black (night) mascara and apply only one coat on the lashes.

Special Occasion Make-up:

Keep your lips sheer and light with glittery clear or beige gloss; choose a glittery pink eye shadow all over the lids and black mascara. The look is instant hot but not overdone.

Let me know if this helps... I'd sure love to see before and after pictures of your make-up!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane,

My problem is not trying to look younger but to look older. I'm 21 and people say that I look 16! Can you help?

~*Mary*~

** MY ANSWER**

Mary,

Thank you for sending in your question to Get Gorgeous Now! I actually have the same problem - I always look younger than I actually am. While this is great when you get older, it can be annoying to deal with at a young age.

Here are some pointers that I think will help...

1. Avoid any "little girl" hair styles. Anything long or medium length with layers (think Jennifer Aniston pre one layer) is definitely going to give you that "just walked off of a feel-good-sitcom taping" look and will make you look younger.

2. Wear make-up all of the time. Even if it is just a little bit - you don't need a lot to make yourself look older. Play up your eyes with some darker eye shadow and eyeliner. Also - wear a colored lip gloss or lipstick. You'll be amazed at what it will do over clear gloss.

3. Watch what you wear. If you are wearing the ever-popular Jennifer Lopez inspired track suits, chances are you will appear younger. Dress more sophisticated but don't go into overkill and ruin the look. Look through fashion magazines to see what actresses your own age are wearing off camera. This might point you in the right direction.

4. Avoid the childish accessories. We all know what I'm talking about - beaded cell phones, cartoon-like earrings or rings, etc. Anything that screams Hello Kitty and not Glam Goddess is overkill. I know there are celebrities out there who have these items - the beaded cell phones especially - but if you want to appear older, act more sophisticated.

I hope this advice helps. Let me know if it does and if you have any other questions, just e-mail me!

Sincerely,

Sarah Jane

www.GetGorgeousNow.com

Combating Dark Circles - Skin Tips

** QUESTION FROM A READER **

Hello Sarah Jane,

I have dark circles round my eyes. What kind of makeup can I use to cover this and what can I do to make them less visible when I’m not wearing makeup?
Hey Melissa,

Thank you for the question!

My views on microdermabrasion are quite positive - there are really no downsides to the process, as there are no chemicals used which means no allergic reactions! Most people dislike the fact that their face can go a bit pink afterwards, but that usually goes away in a day.

The good thing with this particular process is that it is safe for all skin types - whether you are an oily, a dry, or a neutral. I'm not sure if you've seen the effects of the process but it helps in many ways. It will cause your skin care products to become more useful as you won't be applying it over dead skin cells AND it will give you a more youthful look. Many people who have this process done quite often usually love to get it done the day before a big night out.

My only question back to you is - are you considering this process? Is your skin, at 22, in need of a pick-me-up? I think if you are in need of a skin makeover, you should research into it further and then decide if it's right for you!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sincerely,

If you aren't aware of the stripes taboo on clothing... and which direction makes your body appear disproportioned, read on!

We've researched the clothes that will make you look slimmer and come up with tips and tricks on looks that will achieve LENGTH in your body.

We'll go over five tips to looking slimmer in clothing and under each tip, we'll discuss the various ways to achieve that particular look.

We know that looking slimmer is something every woman wants, so we've done our best to bring the BEST Hollywood secrets to you…

1. Choose clothing all in one color to give yourself a long, lean look.

Don’t wear blocks of color from head to toe. For example, if you wear a white top, black pants, and white shoes, you are going to appear "heavier."

Only the thinnest people can get away with wearing opposite colors from top to bottom. Choose colors that coordinate well together but aren’t so drastically different.

A well put together look in one color paints the picture in someone's mind that you are a classy, got-it-going-on woman who knows how to properly pull an outfit together.

This isn't to say that you can't infuse color into your outfit, we would just recommend infusing it by way of a scarf, a belt or some other accessory.

2. Wear black. It gives a look that is especially slimming.

Darker colors are naturally more slimming. Shop for outfits in darker shades. They hide unwanted bumps and bulges... and darker shades usually make the wearer look considerably thinner than lighter hues would.

If you wear dark colors with vertical patterns and stripes and you’ll magically shed unwanted inches.

Darker hues are also classier. They can be dressed up or dressed down and darker hues make a person look more professional or sophisticated- so
long as it is a decent style.

3. Try to avoid shapeless clothing. No one is fooled, and loose clothes often make you appear wider or heavier anyway.

Don’t wear clothing that’s two sizes or more too large.

You might think you’re covering up extra weight, but you’ll only look like you’re hiding under yards of material.

Most people don’t look as overweight as they think they do.

There is nothing worse than seeing someone in a baggy t-shirt with jeans walking through the mall. The reason they are wearing it is obvious- they don't have enough confidence in the way they look.

What most people don't realize is they are actually drawing more attention.

People notice well-dressed women and not-so-well-dressed women. If women follow the basic principles of style and wear clothes that actually fit them- not too tight, not too baggy, they will actually notice an improvement in their overall style.

Buy well-fitting clothing and you'll actually look smaller.

4. Avoid tight clothing that will emphasize your heavy areas.

Don’t wear clothing so tight that you look melted and poured in. Wearing clothes that are too tight is not attractive either, especially if you are carrying a few extra pounds.

Tight clothing constricts our bodies from being able to breathe and move around properly.

When the body is put into a body cast of spandex or tight cotton, the outcome is a horrendous mess.

By wearing tight clothing, you are showing off those insecure areas ten-fold to the rest of the world.

5. Steer clear of horizontal stripes, which make you appear wider, but consider vertical stripes, which make you look longer and leaner.

Get rid of clothing with horizontal stripes. Even the slimmest person will look portly in outfits bearing horizontal patterns and stripes.

If you prefer clothing with patterns and stripes, make sure they run vertically.

They will give the body a taller and slimmer appearance. Illusion is a major key to looking thinner.

Speaking of patterns, avoid clothing with large patterns.

For some reason clothing designers create plus size fashions with large patterns. These patterns are usually large flower blossoms and geometric shapes.

They often look garish and tawdry.

Even if you wear plus sizes, don’t go for these unflattering fashions.

If you like flowers and geometric shapes, look for clothing with smaller designs. Large gaudy patterns flatter no one.

It's easy to slim down with your clothes, just follow a few basic style rules and wear comfortable clothing.

Clothes are to women as masks are to actors.
